Thazhathangady Juma Masjid in KottayamThazhathangady Juma Masjid in Kottayam is situated on the banks of river “Meenachil” and is one of the heritage zones in Kerala. This mosque is some thousand years old and quite popular for its beauty, intricate architecture and wooden sculpture. In 2012, the mosque’s southern part was demolished and the extension work was carried out with pillars made of iron and sheets of aluminium ending with minarets.
Thazhathangady Juma Masjid is also known as “Taj Juma Masjid”. The descendants of this mosque came from various parts of Kerala and settled here. The Muslims living here also actively participated in the struggle for freedom as well as in the related national movements. The foundation of the mosque was made by Jama-Athe members in 1959 and it was completed in 1964. Since 1947, Hanafi tradition is followed by the residents of the mosque under the guidance of Settu Masjid, Kottayam. Haji Abdul Karim Sahib, the first President of the Jama-Athe dedicated the shrine to the inhabitants of the area. Alhaj P P Ahmed Alim Sahib took care of the maintenance of the mosque and he was also the Imam of the mosque between 1964 and 1993.
The mosque is maintained well and the surroundings are also maintained clean and tidy. This place looks lovely on a full moon night. Only men are allowed inside the mosque. This place is calm and serene and gives relaxation to your mind. This place is both historical as well as religious place to visit.
