Malliyoor Maha Ganapathy Temple in Kottayam

The Malliyoor Maha Ganapathy Temple is an ancient temple in Kottayam District which is visited by many pilgrims from all over India. This temple belongs to the family of Bhagavatha Hamsam Brahamasree Malliyoor Shankaran Namboothiri. Only his descendants can become the main priest of this temple. Son of God Shiva and Paravathy, Lord Ganesha occupies main place in this temple and is worshipped here in the form of Beeja Ganapathy with a lime on the tip of the twisted trunk and axe, rope, horn and laddoo in hands.

Only Hindus are allowed to enter the temple and the main offerings are Ganapathy Homan, Mukkutti Pushpanjali, Aayiram Kudam abhishekam, Palppayasam, Thadi Nivedyam, Pazhamala etc. The main auspicious days considered for worship are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The temple opens at 5 a.m. and closes at 11.30 a.m. In the evening it opens at 5.30 and closes at 8.00. The best season to visit this temple is February, March and September to December.

The main festival of this temple is Vinayaka Chaturthi, the day on which Lord Vinayaka was created by Goddess Parvathy. It comes in the month of August-September. Special poojas and fasts are held on this day. In March-April 8-day-long annual festival is also held. In January-February the birthday of Brahmasree Malliyoor is celebrated with great pomp and show.

Suryakalady Maha Ganapathy Devasthanam

Suryakalady Maha is an ancient temple near Kottayam on the bank of Meenachil river which is famous for its tantric and mantric activities. It is believed that hundreds of years ago Surya Deva gave a mantric book to a Kaladi family member. Since than Surya Deva is the Guru of Surya Kaladi Bhattathiries and Lord Ganesha is worshipped here in the form of Beeja Ganapathy with ten hands and accompanied by wife.

In the morning Ganapathy Homam and Palppayasa Homam are performed and Mukkooti Homam and Nalikera Ganapathy Homam are offered. The main festival of this temple is Vinayaka Chathurthi. On this auspicious day Ganapathy pooja starts at 5 a.m. and ends at 1.30 p.m. Surya pooja is done on every Sunday and on 1 st day of every month Shiva Parvathy pooja is performed.

Vazhappally Maha Ganapathy Temple

In the compound of Vazhappally Mahadeva Temple this ancient Siddhi Vinayaka temple is situated. Towards South of this temple is Dhwaja Pratishtha. The main offerings include Modakam, Ottayappam, Unniyappam, Ganapathy Homam and Mukkootti Pushpanjali. In the month of March – April a 10 day long annual utsavam is held. Vinayaka Chaturthi is also celebrated here.

Kalakadu Maha Ganapathy Temple Parippu

Kalakadu Illam which is famous for mantras and tantras manage this temple located at Parippu near Kottayam. This temple is famous for two Ganapathy idols, one in the standing form and the other in the sitting form. The temple is open for devotees between 6 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. The main offerings are Ashtharavya Maha Ganapathy Homam, Unniyappam, Modakam and Karukamala and the main festival is Vinayaka Chaturthi in Chingam.

Kanjirappally Pillayar Kovils

This temple, built in granite is located in Kanjirappally and reflects the influence of Tamil in religion and culture. The Vellala Pillas who came to Kanjirappally from Kumbhakonam built a new temple in Pallava style architecture on the northern side of the temple area and named it Northern Ganapathy Kovil. Together these two temples are called Pilliyar Kovils. The main offerings of the temple are Ashthadravya Maha Ganapathy Homam, Unniyappam, Modakam and Karukamala. The main festival is Vinayaka Chaturthi in Chingam.

Kidangoor Maha Ganapathy Temple

Kidangoor Maha Ganapathy temple with a beautiful idol of Maha Ganapathy is situated near Kidangoor Subramanya Swami Temple. Different forms of Ganapathy are decorated on the Nalambalam wall. The main offerings of this temple are Astharavya Maha Ganapathy Homam, Unniyappam, Modakam and Karukarnala. The main festival is Vinayaka Chaturthi in Chingam.

Puthumana Mahaganapathy Devasthanam

In this temple, 21 different idols of Ganapathy representing various Bhavas are worshipped. The devotees are only allowed to worship Siddhi Vinayaka’s idol.

All the other idols can only be worshipped by the priests. Vigneswara Bali is a special ritual conducted here to cure mental diseases. The main offerings of this temple are Karuka Moodal, Ganapathi Prathal, Ganapathiyoottu and Ganesh Sadhya. The annual festival is Vinayaka Chaturthi. The pendants received from here known as Ganeshayantras have super powers and said to be very effective.

Thekkadathu Ganapathy Temple Kudamaloor

This temple run by Thekkedathu Bhattathiri is near Padingattukavu Devi Temple in Kudamaloor. The sacred idol of Lord Ganapathy was placed here from Mullakkal Temple in Alappuzha. Main offering to the idol is Ganapathy Homam. Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated here.
